The Windshield Looks Different From The Other Side

A red Camry Hybrid might look like a sports car from the outside. But for me, it’s not a luxury—it’s a lifeline. Sometimes you have to make decisions based on the life you might have to live, not the one people think you should be living.

Stu sitting where the magic happens.

A red Camry Hybrid parked outside, representing a difficult but necessary decision to buy a reliable vehicle while facing uncertain health, work, and financial circumstances.

Why Did You Buy A Sports Car?

Yesterday, I spent the day at the hospital.

Yeah, great fun.

If you’re interested, I posted about it earlier this morning. → here

Basically… it’s my life.

It’s always complicated.

Earlier, while taking out my trash, a nice neighbor stopped me and asked how I was doing.

She had seen me yesterday on my way to the hospital.

We talked a bit about my situation, and as we drifted into the details of my life, she said:

“Why did you buy that sports car?”

Grrr…

I tried to be nice.

After all, she is a nice woman, and I know she meant well.

But I wanted to say—

It’s a red Camry Hybrid.

It’s my lifeline!

You see, my health can change on a dime. And I might be forced to drive for Uber to survive.

It’s not if it will happen.

It’s when.

I know what it looks like from the outside.

I bought a new car while I’m physically and financially struggling.

It seems crazy…

But, it was smart.

Hell. I got a good deal.

I paid less than I would have for a base model.

And, I didn’t just need a car.

I needed a car I could actually use for Uber if I had to.

I can’t rely on an older car anymore.

I need something reliable enough to last.

I’m not making a two-year plan.

I’m making an eight-year plan.

Maybe I’ll make it six more years and actually get to early retirement.

That’s the goal.

Eight years.

That’s what this car needs to do.

Get me there.

My old car had a blown head gasket.

I spent three months chatting with AI.

Asking question after question.

Trying to figure out how to fix my situation long term.

There was no solution.

Not really.

This was it.

That was it.

Move money around.

Make it look like I wasn’t—desperate.

Sell the car for whatever I could.

And maybe I could get approved for a loan.

Then, I’d deal with the fallout.

Shit…

I was so surprised.

It worked out.

I was lucky.

I was really close to living in a car with a blown head gasket.

I mean—really!

And yes, I’m still close to living in my new car.

That’s okay…

I’m moving forward.

Yes, my plans aren’t conventional.

The next six years may not turn out.

I really don’t know.

It’s fluid.

The plan changes every day.

Maybe I’ll be lucky enough to keep working at Reliable?

Maybe I’ll be forced to drive for Uber next month?

Maybe I’ll finally get approved for disability?

Or maybe I’ll miraculously get better, and I’ll get a new job.

A better job.

I don’t know.

It’s fluid.

Or maybe I’ll be living in my sports car!
