Escaping to Snoopers Rock

On a day when I needed to escape everything, I set off for Snoopers Rock—and found peace, perspective, and the beauty of Tennessee’s wild places. A short hike. A big view. A moment I’ll never forget.

Snoopers Rock

On June 4th, 2020, I needed to get far away and leave it all behind—the infusions, the doctors, the pain, the regrets.

A few days earlier, I had been following one of my favorite travelers on Instagram—See Heather Go.
Thanks, Heather. 😊 After years of following your adventures, I borrowed your tagline for myself.
I hope you don’t mind—after all, it’s for a good cause. You’ve been an inspiration.

Heather has traveled all over the world, sharing some of the most incredible photos. Definitely go check her out—you won’t be disappointed.

Anyway, she had posted pictures of Snoopers Rock, and I immediately felt the urge to go. So, I made the four-and-a-half-hour journey.

From South Carolina, the trip was wonderful and flew by in the blink of an eye.

A view from Snooper Rock

Snoopers Rock is a short walk, not even a hike. Looking back, the ¾ mile trail felt like just a 200-yard walk before stepping out of the woods into a stunning view of nature’s beauty.

The pictures don’t do it justice—it’s massive—indescribably vast.

It was hard to believe—I had been driving down a gravel road for what felt like forever, deep into an enormous forest—and then suddenly, there I was, sitting on the edge of a rock, looking out over the world.

This guy—me—was high above everything else. It was a rush like no other, and I remember thinking my life couldn’t get any better.

Snoopers Rock sits in the Tennessee River Gorge inside Prentice Cooper State Forest, located on Suck Creek Mountain. The forest spans nearly 25,000 acres, though the park itself covers 7,000 of those acres.

The view is totally worth the ride, but the hike is a bit underwhelming. So, I decided to find something else to do—and I did—Foster Falls.

Foster Falls is an impressive 60-foot waterfall that cascades into a large swimming pool below. The hike was short—just over half a mile.

After hiking less than two miles in total, I kept looking for more and found Mullen’s Cove Loop.

I didn’t stay there long, though. The trail is nine miles long, which was more than I was up for.

I’m not sure which pictures corresponded to which places, but all I know is it was a good day.
